Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has evolved over thousands of years. TCM practitioners use various mind and body practices (such as acupuncture) as well as herbal products to address health problems.

Acupuncture is a technique in which practitioners stimulate specific points on the body, usually by inserting thin needles through the skin. Studies suggest that acupuncture stimulates the release of the body’s natural painkillers and affects areas in the brain involved in processing pain. Acupuncture may help ease types of pain that are often chronic, such as low-back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis/knee pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. It also may help reduce the frequency of tension headaches and prevent migraine headaches.

Chinese herbal medicines are mainly plant based, but some preparations include minerals or animal products. They can be packaged as powders, pastes, lotions or tablets, depending on the herb and its intended use. Different herbs have different properties and can balance particular parts of the body. Prescribing a particular herb or concoction of herbs means the practitioner’s diagnosis has to take into account the state of the patient’s Yin and Yang, and the elements that are governing the affected organs.

Homeopathy is suitable for the whole family, especially for babies. It is safe and gentle and very effective for all types of health problems.

The most asked question is “what is homeopathy”? Homeopathy is a method of treatment which stimulates the body’s own healing processes in order to cure illnesses. Homeopathy is based upon the discovery that a substance is small does can alleviate symptoms similar to those it causes in higher doses. The phrase “like cures like” is often used to describe a basic concept behind homeopathy. The remedies are extremely diluted so that there are no toxic effects. The remedies are made from plants, minerals and other natural substances. A detailed case study is taken and every detail of a person’s life is important, not just the symptoms in isolation and a remedy is prescribed determined by the totality of the symptoms.

What the eye reveals! The iris is a map to the inner health of the body.

Iridology is the study of the iris, or coloured part of the eye. The iris reveals changing conditions of every part of the organ of the body. Through various marks, signs and discolouration in the iris, nature reveals inherited weaknesses and strengths. Iridology cannot detect a specific disease however it can tell an individual if they have over or under activity in specific areas of the body.

Iridology is generally safe, non-invasive and painless. It is not a treatment therapy but rather a diagnostic tool used to detect underlying signs of developing disease. The goal of Iridology is therefore to recognise health problems at their earliest stages and to suggest ways to keep disease from developing.

The Iridologist will examine your eye with a slit lamp, penlight or magnifying glass.

Photographs of the iris may also be obtained with a specially designed camera. The examination and consultation should generally half an hour.

Have your iris photos taken and interpreted by our experienced iridologists. Iridology is part of a consultation with your Naturopath or Herbalist or short consultations are available.

The Lymphatic system is our front line of defence in fighting infections, detoxifying the body and transporting metabolic wastes, excess water, bacteria and toxins out of the body. The Lymph glands (at neck, armpits, groin, etc.) are connected by a broad network of vessels which transplant the fluid. Muscular movement is required to move it, as there is no “Heart” to pump it. Lymphatic drainage massage aids the movement of lymph and is particularly useful when the body is overloaded with toxins. It is also highly recommended for those prone to and recovering from sore throats, colds, infections, on-going tiredness, excess fluid, low immunity, swollen glands and also for the physically inactive. Lymphatic drainage is indicated after the removal of lymph glands (such as in breast cancer) as the lymphatic system often needs help to treat and prevent the build up of fluid. The massage usually includes the whole body and is at times gentle but deeper massage may be required in areas where lymph flow is blocked by muscular tension. There is a feeling of wellbeing immediately after the massage as the nervous system has relaxed and the toxins begin to move out of the body.

Rolfing Structural Integration, or Rolfing as it is more commonly known, was devised by Dr Ida P Rolf, as a holistic system of soft tissue manipulation and movement education. It is an approach to healing that deals with the way the body’s structure affects its function.

Rolfing aims to realign the body by using deep pressure and stroking massage techniques to stretch shortened and tightened myofascia back into shape. With treatment, the myofascia becomes softer and more flexible, restoring its natural balance in relation to muscles, tendons and bones. With this change of myofascia, the practitioner evokes a more normal movement, enhancing a more natural flow of energy. Practitioners use their knuckles, knees, elbows, or fingers to create pressure that manipulates the myofascia, releasing deeply held tension. Patients are usually treated on a massage table and will be appropriately unclothed. Education is also an important part of the treatment, to increase the patient’s awareness of body structure.

Research has demonstrated that Rolfing creates a more efficient use of the muscles, allows the body to conserve energy, and creates more economical and refined patterns of movement. It is a beneficial treatment for people who have a history of injury whereby the minor injuries are beginning to interfere with their everyday lives. Some problems for which it would be suitable are:

  • Whiplash
  • Poor Posture
  • Chronic Pain
  • R.S.I.

A full Rolfing course involves 10 sessions of 60 to 90 minutes each, however this can vary depending on what the client is after.

Western Medical Herbal Medicine is still the first choice in many cultures, being successfully used for thousands of years. Herbalists prepare unique treatments, after consultations with clients that will include discussions about lifestyle, medical history and nutrition. Western Herbalists use only whole plants or plant parts in their preparations. Clients may be treated through the use of teas, capsules and tablets, extracts and tinctures, essential oils and various other herbal preparations.

Herbs contain a large number of naturally occurring chemicals that have biological activity and compounds from plants that are used to produce reliable pharmaceutical drugs. Herbalism does however support holistic treatment, with prevention of disease being as important as the treatment of a particular illness. Another benefit of choosing herbal medicines is that a profound transformation in health can be achieved, without the danger of the inherent side effects common in drug-based medication.

Conditions which may benefit by herbal medicines, include a wide range of minor ailments such as:

  • Upset stomachs
  • The common Cold and Flu
  • Headaches, menstrual problems
  • Sore muscles
  • Skin rashes and so forth.

Other conditions that respond well to herbal remedies are:

  • Digestive disorders such as Peptic Ulcers
  • Colitis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Rheumatic and Arthritic Conditions
  • Chronic skin problems such as Eczema and Psoriasis
  • Anxiety and tension related stress
  • Bronchitis and other respiratory conditions
  • Hypertension and allergies.

An initial consultation with a western Herbalist, will take from 1 to 1 ½ hours and several follow up sessions are usually required. Herbal products are an important part of health care but self prescription is not advisable, as even the safest herb can interact with other medications. A consultation with a professional Herbalist is recommended.
