Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has evolved over thousands of years. TCM practitioners use various mind and body practices (such as acupuncture) as well as herbal products to address health problems.

Acupuncture is a technique in which practitioners stimulate specific points on the body, usually by inserting thin needles through the skin. Studies suggest that acupuncture stimulates the release of the body’s natural painkillers and affects areas in the brain involved in processing pain. Acupuncture may help ease types of pain that are often chronic, such as low-back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis/knee pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. It also may help reduce the frequency of tension headaches and prevent migraine headaches.

Chinese herbal medicines are mainly plant based, but some preparations include minerals or animal products. They can be packaged as powders, pastes, lotions or tablets, depending on the herb and its intended use. Different herbs have different properties and can balance particular parts of the body. Prescribing a particular herb or concoction of herbs means the practitioner’s diagnosis has to take into account the state of the patient’s Yin and Yang, and the elements that are governing the affected organs.

Homeopathy is suitable for the whole family, especially for babies. It is safe and gentle and very effective for all types of health problems.

The most asked question is “what is homeopathy”? Homeopathy is a method of treatment which stimulates the body’s own healing processes in order to cure illnesses. Homeopathy is based upon the discovery that a substance is small does can alleviate symptoms similar to those it causes in higher doses. The phrase “like cures like” is often used to describe a basic concept behind homeopathy. The remedies are extremely diluted so that there are no toxic effects. The remedies are made from plants, minerals and other natural substances. A detailed case study is taken and every detail of a person’s life is important, not just the symptoms in isolation and a remedy is prescribed determined by the totality of the symptoms.

Hypnotherapy & Counselling:

Practitioners:

Alec Halls

Hypnotherapy addresses subconscious emotional struggles & difficult memories. We can often describe our problems logically, yet the problem remains. This is where hypnotherapy comes in handy; to safely and gently deal with the root-cause of the emotional issue that lies below-the-surface.

Relaxation massage seeks to relax, improve general wellbeing and reduce mental stress and general body tension within you.  The massage therapist employs slow, flowing techniques to soothe and loosen the body to accomplish this. Rolfing Structural Integration, or Rolfing as it is more commonly known, was devised by Dr Ida P Rolf, as a holistic system of soft tissue manipulation and movement education. It is an approach to healing that deals with the way the body’s structure affects its function.

Rolfing aims to realign the body by using deep pressure and stroking massage techniques to stretch shortened and tightened myofascia back into shape. With treatment, the myofascia becomes softer and more flexible, restoring its natural balance in relation to muscles, tendons and bones. With this change of myofascia, the practitioner evokes a more normal movement, enhancing a more natural flow of energy. Practitioners use their knuckles, knees, elbows, or fingers to create pressure that manipulates the myofascia, releasing deeply held tension. Patients are usually treated on a massage table and will be appropriately unclothed. Education is also an important part of the treatment, to increase the patient’s awareness of body structure.

Research has demonstrated that Rolfing creates a more efficient use of the muscles, allows the body to conserve energy, and creates more economical and refined patterns of movement. It is a beneficial treatment for people who have a history of injury whereby the minor injuries are beginning to interfere with their everyday lives. Some problems for which it would be suitable are:

  • Whiplash
  • Poor Posture
  • Chronic Pain
  • R.S.I.

A full Rolfing course involves 10 sessions of 60 to 90 minutes each, however this can vary depending on what the client is after.

Botanica Naturopaths are very experienced with a weight loss programme called the Keto System. This is an effective weight loss programme which is based on the balance of carbohydrates, protein and fats. Low blood sugar is responsible for many out of control sugar and carbohydrate cravings. This method balances the blood sugar and eradicates insulin resistance which actually prevents the body from being able to burn fat. The client not only loses weight but has an increase in sense of well-being.

Western Medical Herbal Medicine is still the first choice in many cultures, being successfully used for thousands of years. Herbalists prepare unique treatments, after consultations with clients that will include discussions about lifestyle, medical history and nutrition. Western Herbalists use only whole plants or plant parts in their preparations. Clients may be treated through the use of teas, capsules and tablets, extracts and tinctures, essential oils and various other herbal preparations.

Herbs contain a large number of naturally occurring chemicals that have biological activity and compounds from plants that are used to produce reliable pharmaceutical drugs. Herbalism does however support holistic treatment, with prevention of disease being as important as the treatment of a particular illness. Another benefit of choosing herbal medicines is that a profound transformation in health can be achieved, without the danger of the inherent side effects common in drug-based medication.

Conditions which may benefit by herbal medicines, include a wide range of minor ailments such as:

  • Upset stomachs
  • The common Cold and Flu
  • Headaches, menstrual problems
  • Sore muscles
  • Skin rashes and so forth.

Other conditions that respond well to herbal remedies are:

  • Digestive disorders such as Peptic Ulcers
  • Colitis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Rheumatic and Arthritic Conditions
  • Chronic skin problems such as Eczema and Psoriasis
  • Anxiety and tension related stress
  • Bronchitis and other respiratory conditions
  • Hypertension and allergies.

An initial consultation with a western Herbalist, will take from 1 to 1 ½ hours and several follow up sessions are usually required. Herbal products are an important part of health care but self prescription is not advisable, as even the safest herb can interact with other medications. A consultation with a professional Herbalist is recommended.
